Anand Parekh Appointed Chief Health Policy Officer at U-M
The University of Michigan (U-M) School of Public Health has named
Indian-American physician Anand Parekh as its inaugural chief health
policy officer. This historic appointment underscores the university’s
commitment to bridging research, policy, and public engagement.
In his new role, Parekh will focus on translating academic research into
real-world policy solutions, mentoring both students and faculty, and fostering
collaboration across disciplines. He will also play a key role in strengthening
Michigan Medicine’s advocacy and population health initiatives, while advising
the Institute for Healthcare Policy Innovation on external relations and policy
engagement, according to a statement released by the University.
Parekh’s career highlights a blend of clinical practice, public service,
and health policy leadership. A graduate of the University of Michigan’s
Inteflex program, he spent over a decade at the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, where he served as deputy assistant secretary for health and,
at one point, as acting assistant secretary for health. His contributions have
spanned critical areas, from addressing the opioid epidemic and senior health
issues to advancing pandemic preparedness.
Before returning to Michigan, Parekh worked with the Bipartisan
Policy Center in Washington, D.C., where he led national initiatives in
health and housing and pushed for solutions through consensus-building and
bipartisan dialogue. He has consistently emphasized collaboration as the
cornerstone of sustainable health policy.
“While I have ideas, I feel it’s crucial to first understand what others
think is needed and where I can be most helpful,” Parekh shared, highlighting
his focus on inclusivity and shared vision. He believes that policy must
address broader determinants of health, such as clean air and water, food
safety, disease prevention, and promoting healthier lifestyles.
His thought leadership is reflected in his book, Prevention First:
Policymaking for a Healthier America, which advocates proactive public health
strategies. His influence was also recognized when he was listed among
Washington, D.C.’s 500 most influential people in 2023.
As New India Abroad reports, Parekh’s appointment marks a pivotal moment
for U-M and the broader health community, blending academic excellence with
practical policy leadership aimed at building a healthier America.
