Two Children Killed, 17 Wounded in Minneapolis Catholic School Shooting – New India Abroad

A tragic school
shooting shook Minneapolis on Aug. 27 when a gunman opened fire at
Annunciation Catholic School during Mass, leaving two children dead and 17
others wounded. According to authorities, the assailant, identified as Robin
Westman, 23, fired through church windows at students seated in pews and
entering the building, before taking his own life. The victims included two
students, aged 8 and 10, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
Minneapolis Police
Chief Brian O’Hara described the attack as “a deliberate act of violence
against innocent children,” calling it both cruel and incomprehensible. The
incident highlights the ongoing epidemic of gun violence in U.S. schools
despite heightened security protocols, technology, and prevention measures.
Officials confirmed that Westman used a rifle, shotgun, and pistol — all
purchased legally — and additional firearms were later found at residences
linked to the shooter.
Mayor Jacob Frey urged
the public not to use the tragedy as a reason to stigmatize the transgender
community, clarifying that one individual’s actions should not reflect on an
entire group. Meanwhile, the FBI is investigating the case as domestic terrorism
and a hate crime against Catholics. An online manifesto and videos discovered
by investigators revealed troubling signs of depression and admiration for past
school shooters.
Hospitals reported
treating 14 children and two adults, all expected to survive. Students
described scenes of chaos and terror, with one fifth grader recounting how a
friend shielded him from bullets. President Donald Trump has ordered the U.S.
flag to be flown at half-staff nationwide to honor the victims.
With this being the 146th
school shooting in the U.S. since January, the tragedy underscores the
urgency of addressing gun laws and strengthening school safety. New India
Abroad continues to follow developments, echoing calls from Indian American
lawmakers who condemned the violence and demanded stronger action against
gun-related tragedies.
