Hoboken Mayor Bhalla Seeks to Award $1MN for Upliftment Projects
In a significant move
toward community development, Hoboken
Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla announced on July 4 that the city will allocate
over $1 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to support
various local nonprofit organizations and essential infrastructure upgrades
within the Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA).
The initiative
reflects Bhalla’s ongoing commitment to enhancing quality of life for Hoboken
residents, especially those in vulnerable communities. The proposed allocation
of approximately $685,000 is specifically targeted at the Hoboken Housing
Authority for two critical improvement projects. The first includes the
replacement of aging boiler systems that currently serve senior and disabled
residents. These upgrades aim to provide more reliable heating systems across
housing units, especially in the winter months.
The second major focus
of the funding is to strengthen the security infrastructure in HHA buildings.
This includes installations of modern security systems, surveillance upgrades,
and additional safety features to protect residents in facilities such as Fox
Hill Gardens, Monroe Gardens, and Adams Gardens. These efforts are aimed at
fostering a more secure and comfortable environment for the city's senior and
disabled population.
The remaining funds
from the $1 million-plus grant will be allocated to several local nonprofit
organizations engaged in community
upliftment programs ranging from youth development and food assistance
to healthcare outreach and educational services.
According to Mayor
Bhalla, “These grants are vital investments in our city’s future. By supporting
infrastructure and community-based services, we’re creating a stronger, safer
Hoboken for all residents.”
This strategic
deployment of CDBG funds ensures that federal resources directly benefit the
communities that need them most. The plan has received strong support from
local stakeholders, who view the effort as a much-needed boost to the city’s
public housing and community service landscape.
New
India Abroad highlights
this development as a model of proactive governance, where targeted investments
are made to uplift underserved communities and reinforce the foundation of
local infrastructure and services.
