In a tragic update making headlines under India Today World News, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on June 13 to meet Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the only known survivor of the catastrophic Air India flight AI-171 crash. The incident has claimed at least 260 lives and shocked the global Indian diaspora.

The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad International Airport on June 12. It slammed into a nearby medical college hostel, causing widespread devastation. The flight was en route to London Gatwick with 242 people on board, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.

Ramesh, 40, who was seated near an emergency exit in seat 11A, miraculously survived. According to police sources, he managed to jump from the aircraft, though it is yet to be confirmed whether it was before or after impact. He was travelling with his brother and returning to the UK after visiting family in India.

New India Abroad reports that Prime Minister Modi, alongside Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, had earlier inspected the crash site. The PM's visit to the hospital was aimed at showing solidarity and assessing the medical response firsthand. Twenty-five individuals are currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the crash.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the disaster. Preliminary reports suggest the aircraft, a Boeing Dreamliner, had undergone a routine maintenance check shortly before the incident, raising serious concerns about operational safety and airworthiness.

As part of its continuing India Today World News coverage, New India Abroad will track developments in the investigation and the recovery process. The Air India tragedy has sparked national mourning and renewed debate over aviation safety standards. International bodies are expected to collaborate with Indian authorities to determine the exact cause of the crash and ensure accountability.

This heartbreaking event has united communities in grief and concern, with the world watching closely as India navigates one of its worst air disasters in recent history.
